On January19th, the Political and National Guidance Committee organized a seminar in Salfit, a city about 26 km south-west of Nablus, titled “Strategic Planning for Disaster Risk Reduction”. Dr. Jalal Dabbeek, Director of the Earth Sciences and Seismic Engineering Center (ESSEC) and the Vice-president of the National Agency for Disaster Risk Mitigation, lectured in the seminar.

Dr. Dabbeek clarified that An-Najah University works in collaboration with the different civil and governmental institutions to raise the awareness of citizens about disaster risk reduction. Dr. Dabbeek discussed how to assess disasters’ risks in general and how to determine the level of such risks and the ability of societies and institutions to face them individually or through internal help.

He also spoke about the disaster risk reduction system and its relationship with sustainable development and strategic planning, the mechanism of assessing aftermath damage and the international standards related to the identification of damage levels and severity. Furthermore, he displayed a number of models of disaster risk maps and vulnerability of buildings and explained how to build individuals’ and institutions’ resilience to disasters. He also mentioned the important results of the General Seismic Survey which was performed by the ESSEC and the Opinion Polls and Survey Studies Center at An Najah on the level of awareness regarding earthquakes and earthquake-proof buildings. After the lecture, Dr. Dabbeek answered the audience’s questions regarding disaster risk reduction.
