The social accountability committee conducted a meeting for its members to explore opportunities of societal development, evaluate the performance of sub committees, and draft a strategy for its programs and future societal activities, on the short and long terms.

Professor Maher Natsheh, An-Najah President, received the members of the delegation and acknowledged their achievements and role in promoting social accountability. Natsheh offered the support of the university to the committee to implement ad achieve its developmental plans.

Dr. Maher Abu-Zant, Vice President for Administrative Affairs, explained that the committee has concluded its bylaws and will present its plans for approval. Abu-Zant noted that certain community problems require urgent solutions, including traffic jams in the city center and other vital areas in Nablus city, and related problems of parking lots, streets and sidewalks, pedestrian walkways, and the need for organization traffic lights and traffic signs across the city.

In addition, Dr. Abu-Zant talked about the importance of developing the transportation system in Palestine gradually and within a certain timeline, through initiating a change of culture among the community and through the media. This can be achieved as people would use alternative transportation methods, which are cheaper and less harmful to the environment, such as bicycles, with the importance of preparing appropriate paths for using them.

The members of the committee discussed the roles and responsibilities of the sub committees, which include the organization committee, the disclosure committee, the charter committee, and the traffic and transportation committee. It is worth noting that the social accountability committee is mandated by the Ministry of Local Government, and is formed of civil society institutions and the private sector, such as Nablus municipality, the media center, the police, the businessmen forum, the Nablus governorate, and some active charities and organizations.
