Dr ‎Samah Saleh from the Department of Sociology and Mr. Saed Abu-‎Hijleh from the Geography Department at An-Najah National ‎University, recently participated in an international academic ‎workshop held at the University of Amsterdam.‎

The context of the workshop was continued academic and research cooperation on “Palestinian Ethnography” with internationally renowned anthropologist and middle east scholar from the University of Amsterdam Prof. Annelies Moors.

The workshop included many scholars and researchers from different universities across the globe, and was divided into three sessions; the first was on “Palestine” as a topic of research. The second was titled: “Debating Muslims: Media and Fields". The third was entitled: “Politics, the Self, and the Production of Knowledge”.

Mr. Abu-Hijleh presented a research paper entitled: “Kill the land, kill the people: the Geography of “Homo-Spacio-cide” under Zionist Apartheid”.

Mr. Abu-Hijleh explained how the policies of Israeli Zionist occupation are designed and implemented to “kill” the Palestinian environment and physical space. Also, he noted that the Israeli Zionist occupation aims to “kill” Palestinians and continue the campaign to ethnically cleanse Palestine from its native population to realize the longstanding Zionist slogan “a land without people for a people without land”.

He also explained how the Israeli Zionist occupation kills Palestinians. In order to take the people who upkeep the land out of the equation and thus render the land and environment as inhabitable.

Furthermore, Mr. Abu-Hjleh explained the different methods used by Palestinians and their national liberation movement to resist and counter Israeli policies and measures politically, economically, and culturally.

Dr. Saleh presented a research paper titled: “Narratives from Prisons: the experience of Palestinian women political prisoners”. The political prisoner talked about the plight of Palestinian women political prisoners and their struggle to preserve their humanity and national identity in face of the harsh dehumanizing practices of Israeli prison authorities.

Dr. Saleh also explained how the experiences of Palestinian poilitcal prisoners are reflected in their narratives before and after imprisonment.

After the end of the workshop, all participants and attendees moved to Aula Hall of the University of Amsterdam to attend the highly prestigious “Valedictory Lecture” by Prof. Moors.

The lecture focused on Prof. Moors' long and rich academic and research journey. The title of Prof. Moors’s lecture was: “Liberating the Money, Liberating the Sperm: Social Reproduction, Living Islam, and Palestinian Ethnography Revisited”.

During the lecture Prof. Moors presented the findings of her joint research with Dr. Samah Saleh. The findings highlighted the innovative methods used by Palestinian prisoners serving high sentences in Israeli jails to reproduce through smuggled sperm to their wives using in vitro fertilization (IVF) and thus transcending the strict security barriers of the Israeli prison system.
