The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at An-Najah National University has recently joined the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), a U.S independent, not-for-profit organization that provides high-quality assessments of healthcare professionals.

The board is home to healthcare professionals from prominent American universities and hospitals and develops and manages most of the medical courses examinations, most important of which is the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).

While the individual licensing boards grant the license to practice medicine, all medical boards in the US accept a passing score on the USMLE as evidence that an applicant demonstrates the core competencies to practice medicine. As a result, healthcare consumers throughout the nation enjoy a high degree of confidence that their doctors have met a common standard. The NBME and the Federation of State Medical Boards co- sponsor the USMLE, and the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates is the third collaborator in the USMLE programme.

The organization also offers services to 60 universities around the world to manage the medical examinations in each parenting country.

Having joined NBME, 65 senior medical students from An-Najah sat for the NBME examination for internal medicine and general surgery. The examination took place on March 16th and March 23rd, 2016.

It is worth mentioning that An-Najah staff has produced more than 700 research publications on various medical issues in the last five years in addition to their participation in a number of national and international medical conferences.

The university is also working to establishing the first Bioequivalence Centre in Palestine and has recently applied to obtain the IRB Good Clinical Practice accreditation.

Notes:

Founded in 1915, NBME aims to protect the health of the public through state of the art assessment of health professionals. While centered on assessment of physicians, the board's mission encompasses the spectrum of health professionals along the continuum of education, training and practice and includes research in evaluation as well as development of assessment instruments.
