On Tuesday, April 12th, 2016, the UNESCO Chair on Human Rights and Democracy at An-Najah held a workshop on the international humanitarian law with reference to the Palestinian situation at the library’s conference room in the New Campus.

Mr. Larry Mabe, Legal Advisor to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)* in the Palestinian Territories tackled the issues of civilians’ participation in military actions and the difficulty of distinguishing civilians and non-civilians in battle fields which occur in densely populated urban centers.

He also referred to current conflicts in various parts of the world such as Syria, Armenia and Azerbaijan and the role of the international humanitarian law in supporting people there.

At the end of the workshop Mr. Mabe answered the attendees’ questions on the subject.

Notes:

The workshop was also attended by Dr. Joni Assi, Director of the UNESCO Chair on Human Rights and Democracy and Dr. Akram Daoud, Dean of the Faculty of Law at An-Najah.

Since its creation in 1863, the ICRC's sole objective has been to ensure protection and assistance for victims of armed conflict and strife through its direct action around the world, as well as by encouraging the development of international humanitarian law (IHL) and promoting respect for it by governments and all weapon bearers.
