On Wednesday, March 30th, 2016, the American Corner Nablus of the International Office at An-Najah in cooperation with the Faculty of Humanities’ cultural committees held a lecture on the death of the author theory at the conference room in the Old Campus’s library.


Dr. Bilal Hamamreh, Lecturer at the English Language Department talked about the theory according the French literary critic and theorist Ronald Barthes explaining that the author has no power over the literary text; it’s the reader who determines its essence. He also said that receivers have different cultural, social and religious backgrounds that determine the meaning and illustrated by examples from Shakespearian literature.

Dr. Mohammad Hamdan, Lecturer at the English Language Department discussed the theory according to Jacques Derrida as he stresses the importance of the birth of the reader taking into consideration the author’s impact on the text.

In the same context, Dr. Jaber Khdair, Lecturer at the Arabic Language Department talked about situations and reasons which lead to the emergence of Barthes’ theory.

The lecture also included speeches by Dr. Nabil Alawi, Associate Professor at the English Language Department and Dr. Abdulkareem Daraghmeh, Director of the Center of Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) on the subject.

The lecture also included an open discussion where a number of the university students explained texts of their own with relation to the subject.
