In its ongoing pursuit of excellence and global recognition, An-Najah University's International Academic Rankings Department, led by Prof. Waleed M. Sweileh, convened a crucial meeting on Thursday, January 18, 2023. The event marked the third in a series of gatherings with representatives from various faculties to deliberate on strategies for securing a prominent position in the prestigious THE World University Rankings 2024.

The meeting focused on comprehending the intricacies of international classifications and adapting to high-quality standards, recognizing the transformative journey these rankings have undergone. The discourse highlighted the evolution of global classifications, with an emphasis on increasing difficulty over time and a growing focus on quality. Several universities have experienced shifts in their positions due to this evolution, with specific categories recognizing community service and contributions to sustainable development.

Participants engaged in an in-depth exploration of the various types of Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, encompassing the World University Ranking, Arab University Rankings, Emerging Economies University Ranking, the World in THE University Impact Rankings, and the British THE Rankings.

A notable proposal discussed during the meeting involved the creation of a program aimed at linking community activities with sustainable development goals. This initiative seeks to guide community engagement and services towards achieving sustainable development objectives. Emphasis was placed on the significance of documenting and publicizing these activities through faculty websites.

The conversation also delved into the quality of scientific research, emphasizing three primary criteria: Strength, measured by the number of papers in the top 75% of citations; Excellence, based on the number of papers in the top 10% of citations in each field; and Influence, derived from citations in high-end international magazines.

Prof. Sweileh underscored the importance of paying attention to all classifications, as each one provides the university with a unique perspective. He advocated for the thorough documentation of community activities, urging their connection to sustainable development goals.

Participants unanimously emphasized the crucial integration between scientific research and sustainable development goals, seeing it as pivotal for elevating the university's standing on the global stage.
