The Optometry Department at An-Najah National University has successfully renewed its membership in the prestigious World Council of Optometry, a distinction it has proudly held since 2005. This renewal underscores the university’s prominent role in advancing the field of optometry on both national and regional levels.

This achievement reflects the dedicated efforts of Dr. Kherieh Rassas, Vice President for Partnerships and Global Initiatives and President of the Union of Mediterranean Universities (UNIMED). Since the department’s establishment in 2004, Dr. Rassas has been instrumental in laying its academic and professional foundation. Building on this legacy, the current Head of the Optometry Department, Dr. Ithar Beshtawi, continues to drive innovation and development, further enhancing the department’s international reputation.

Founded with a vision to prepare highly qualified specialists in the critical field of optometry, the department has consistently provided advanced academic programs that integrate scientific knowledge with practical application. Dr. Rassas’s strategic leadership set the groundwork for excellence, which Dr. Beshtawi has elevated through the introduction of innovative projects and initiatives, solidifying the department’s standing both locally and globally.

Membership in the World Council of Optometry has enabled An-Najah National University to expand its academic and professional networks, fostering collaborations with universities and research centers worldwide. It has also facilitated participation in international conferences, the exchange of expertise, and the development of curricula aligned with the latest advancements in optometry.

Dr. Beshtawi has carried forward Dr. Rassas’s vision by advancing the department’s academic and research capabilities, establishing it as one of the most prestigious optometry programs in the Arab world. The department’s graduates now hold distinguished positions in leading health and educational institutions, reflecting its exceptional training and academic rigor.

The renewal of this membership is a testament to the department’s academic and research excellence. It reinforces An-Najah National University’s status as a leader in higher education, underscoring its unwavering commitment to advancing healthcare and vision sciences in Palestine.

This accomplishment highlights An-Najah’s pivotal role in promoting specialized education and cutting-edge research, paving the way for a new generation of optometry professionals who are equipped to contribute to the field on a global scale.
