On Monday, October 9th, 2017, the UNESCO Chair on Human Rights and Democracy at An-Najah received Dr. Hamit Bozarslan, a Turkish historian and intellect to give a lecture on his book titled: "What is Revolution" at the library's conference room in the Old Campus.

The lecture shed light on three types of revolution; namely, the end of the world revolution, the political revolution and the democratic revolution. The lecturer thinks that the democratic revolution is the perfect model for the formation of the Arab revolutions.

Dr. Bozarslan said that this revolution takes different paths in Tunisia and Egypt compared to Libya, Syria and Yemen. This refers to the centrality of the state in Egypt and Tunisia as they're relatively not modern societies as Syria, Libya and Yemen. It also refers to the presence or absence of the social base which the Egyptian and Tunisian regime lack, while the Syrian, Yemeni and Libyan regimes resorted to tribalism and sectarianism leading to tragic consequences.

He also mentioned that the course of events in the Arab world was catastrophic leading to the destruction of entire societies.

Notes:

Dr. Bozarslan is the Director of Studies at the EHESS (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales) in Paris and is one of the most important intellects of violence and revolution issues, particularly in the Middle East.
