Actions to Promote More Sustainable Commuting

An-Najah National University is deeply committed to promoting sustainable commuting practices that reduce carbon emissions, ease traffic congestion, and improve the overall quality of campus life. The University adopts a comprehensive approach that integrates environmental responsibility, accessibility, and innovation to encourage students, faculty, and staff to choose greener modes of transportation.

Key actions include:

  • Free and Subsidized Shuttle Services

The University operates a network of shuttle buses connecting the Old and New Campuses, serving as an efficient and affordable shared transport option. These services significantly reduce the use of private vehicles and help lower the University’s carbon footprint.

  • Electric Vehicle (EV) Infrastructure

An-Najah utilizes zero-emission electric vehicles for campus operations and has installed EV charging stations at strategic locations. Preferred parking is provided for electric and fuel-efficient vehicles, encouraging a transition toward cleaner transportation technologies.

  • Bicycle Infrastructure and Initiatives

Dedicated bicycle racks are available at both campuses, and plans are underway to expand cycling facilities and explore the introduction of a bicycle-sharing program to further support active, low-carbon commuting.

  • Carpooling and Ride-Sharing Programs

The University is exploring formal carpooling initiatives to reduce single-occupancy trips. In the meantime, the shuttle system effectively functions as a shared mobility network, supporting collective transportation and social connectivity among users.

  • Reduced Parking Availability

Parking spaces across campus have been intentionally limited to discourage single-passenger vehicle use, reinforcing a shift toward shared, public, and active transport modes.

  • Enhanced Walking and Pedestrian Infrastructure

Continuous investment in shaded walkways, ramps, and safe crossings ensures that walking remains a convenient, inclusive, and attractive commuting option for all community members.

  • Digital Mobility Tools (Najah2Twin)

The University’s interactive campus mobility map, developed under the Najah2Twin initiative, offers real-time navigation and highlights pedestrian routes, accessible entrances, shaded seating areas, and mobility hubs—enhancing the overall commuting experience and promoting smart, sustainable mobility.

Through these strategic actions, An-Najah National University continues to increase the share of sustainable commuting modes while fostering a culture of environmental stewardship, innovation, and inclusivity that aligns with its sustainability vision and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
