Environment and Sustainability Research Center
The Environment and Sustainability Research Center at An-Najah National University, established in 2022 in response to the growing ecological and climate crisis, is dedicated to conducting interdisciplinary and innovative research in the fields of environment and sustainability. The Center aims to strengthen local capacity in environmental research and monitoring, with a focus on promoting applied, policy-oriented research that supports the development of effective environmental policies in Palestine. In its initial phase, the Center is prioritizing research that addresses challenges related to environmental quality and climate change preparedness at the municipal level. Through research, training, and community engagement, the Center provides valuable data and insights to assist policymakers, conservationists, and organizations in managing and protecting natural resources effectively.
Who we are
The Environment and Sustainability Research Center at An-Najah National University was established in 2022 in response to the current ecological and climate crisis. We undertake innovative interdisciplinary research in the areas of urban sustainability and green and smart urbanism. Our goal is to serve as an incubator for researchers from a wide range of disciplines, undertaking applied policy relevant research, which supports quality environmental policy in Palestine, with an emphasis on the urban environment.
Our Mission
The Environment and Sustainability Research Center aims to be a leading hub for urban sustainability research, promoting science-based decision-making in Palestine. Through interdisciplinary studies, the Center addresses key environmental challenges, supports climate risk mitigation, and fosters environmental justice and collaboration across authorities, while making scientific knowledge accessible to policymakers.
Our Work
The Center operates within An-Najah National University, bringing together senior faculty, research associates, affiliates, students, and assistants. Guided by a multidisciplinary steering committee—spanning fields like data science, ecology, earth sciences, sociology, geography, law, and public policy—the Center fosters collaboration and dialogue with stakeholders, including local and central government, NGOs, and business sectors. It shares scientific knowledge with decision-makers through review papers, policy briefs, and innovative research studies.
