On Sunday, March 18th, 2018, a delegation from the Humboldt University of Berlin visited An-Najah National University where they met with Dr. Mohammad Al-Amleh, Vice President of Academic Affairs and a number of deans and faculty members.


The visit aimed at discussing possible means of mutual cooperation between An-Najah and the Humboldt University of Berlin in terms of developing a mobility exchange programme that allows the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Teacher Training students to learn how to teach deaf students.

Dr. Al-Amleh started with a brief about An-Najah history, students, academic programmes and campuses. He said that An-Najah offers an elective course on sign language and mentioned that the Palestinian higher education system is in need to develop deaf and special needs education.

Mr. Samer Aqrouq, Coordinator of the People with Disability Care Office talked about the office history and goals which succeeded to change cultural and behavioral attitudes towards people with disability. He also talked about the number of disabled students and mentioned that 17% of Palestinian individuals are deaf.

Dr. Sa'eda Affouneh, Dean of the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Teacher Training and Head of the E-Learning Centre mentioned that the faculty offers 11 BA and 5 MA programmes and has recently launched the early childhood major programme. She also proposed establishing a minor programme for deaf education.

In turn, the delegation stressed the importance of the programme and discussed the possibility of establishing other programmes to train trainers and teachers at An-Najah to teach university students on how to deal with deaf school students. They also discussed the short-term and long-term outcomes of the programme and discussed future cooperation between the medicine schools at An-Najah and Humboldt University.
