On Monday, May 23rd, 2016, the American Corner Nablus of the International Office at An-Najah concluded the activities of the Afterschool programme, a community-driven expanded learning opportunity that supports developmentally appropriate cognitive, social, physical and emotional outcomes of primary level school students in Nablus Directorate of Education and UNRWA schools.


The ceremony took place at the library’s conference room in the New Campus where the programme targeted the UNRWA’s Balata First School for Girls.

Dr. Mohammed Al-Amleh, Vice President for Academic Affairs welcomed the attendees and talked about the corner’s role to enhance the Palestinian community stressing the importance of academic and social cooperation with the community’s institutions.

Ms Stacy Abraham, Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer at the US Consulate General Jerusalem congratulated the students and talked about the programmes advantages in developing students’ skills and enriching their educational experience.

Ms Khitam Salameh, Balata First School Principal thanked An-Najah and the American Corner for their efforts to make the programme successful pointing out that the programme had a great impact on students proficiencies and cognitive skills.

In turn, Ms Alia Gilbrecht, Coordinator of the American Corner Nablus commended the students’ performance during the programme activities and explained that this year programme hosted students from Balata Refugee Camp School for the first time.

The ceremony also included a singing performance by student Mohanad Al-Asmar and was concluded by awarding the students with their certificates.

The ceremony was also attended by Professor Imad Abdul Haq, Head of the Physical Education Department at An-Najah; Dr. Sulaiman Al-Amad, lecturer at the department and Ms Dana Rassas, Cultural Affairs Advisor at the US Consulate General Jerusalem.

Afterschool programme (Out-of-School Time) serves children and youth of all ages and encompass a broad range of focus areas including academic support, mentoring, youth development, arts and sports and recreation. The activities in which children and youth engage while outside of school hours are critical to their development highlighting the need for quality afterschool programmes in all communities.
