On Tuesday, May 10th, 2016, the he Public Health and Human Rights Centre (PHHRC) at An-Najah held a meeting in Ramallah headed by Dr. Kherieh Rassas, an-Najah’s Vice President for International Development and External Affairs and Director of the PHHRC and Professor Rif'at Al-Safadi, Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease Expert.


Dr. Rassas started the meeting by speaking about the An-Najah’s initiative to establish the Public Health and Human Rights Centre (PHHRC) in 2014 which was funded by the Open Society Foundation (OSF).

She also briefed the attendees on the centre and stated that it aims at promoting medical law and medical principles, strengthening the relation between the medical staff and the patients’ families and exchanging expertise on professional medical rights, duties and ethics in Palestine.

Dr. Rassas added that the centre carried out a number of activities and events in the past few years that aimed at providing services to the Palestinian community and doctors in the fields of public health and medical ethics.

Prof. Safadi discussed the need for an organ transplant centre in Palestine and the relevant rules and regulations.  

In his turn, Dr. Amjad Ezz El-Deen, Director of the Poison Control and Chemical /Biological Analysis Centre at An-Najah talked about the project to establish a biodiversity unit project (pharmacological studies unit) at An-Najah.

The meeting also shed light on several issues related to the Health Sector and the medical ethics system in Palestine, the difference between medical errors and medical neglect and possible methods to develop medical services in Palestine.

The meeting was also attended by Dr. Rand Salman, Director of the National Institute of Public Health,  Ms. Arwa Tamimi, Director of the Legal Department at the Palestinian Ministry of Health,  Dr. Lena Qassim, expert in public health, Ms. Rahma Hdeib, Legal Assistant at the Palestinian Ministry of Justice; Dr. Muayad Al-Khatib from the Faculty of Law; Dr. Abdulsalam Khayat and Ms Ithar Beshtawi from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences; Mr. Khaled Mufleh, Acting Director of the Public Relations Department and Mr. Mithqal Najjar from the International office at An-Najah.
