An-Najah Professor Participates in the 29th Session of the UN Group of Experts on Geographical Names in Thailand

On Monday, April 25th, 2016, Dr. Ahmed Ghadieh, Head of the Geography Department at An-Najah and Member of the National Committee for Geographical Names in Palestine participated in the 29th Session of the UN Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) in Bangkok, Thailand.
The session was over 5 days from April 25th-29th, 2016 and discussed the topic of uniting the names of geographical areas around the world and their pronunciation and the areas locations on the world map. The conference also focused on updating the areas’ names on the map and on the internet.
The session also included a presentation on the working committees’ reports produced by the UN Group of Experts.
Dr. Ghadieh talked about the achievements of the Palestinian National Committee for Geographical Names and the Israeli practices to change the names of the Palestinian geographical features. He also stressed the importance of offering the Palestinian group an opportunity to join the European and American groups.

The Palestinian delegation also included Mr. Mohammad Jabbarin, Chairman of the National Committee for Geographical Names in Palestine; Engineer Jihad Rabaya, Surveying & Mapping Expert and Eng. Jamal Zetawi, a specialist in geographical information system (GIS).
