A team consisting of students: Omar Abdullah (UAE University), Gonzalo Beviglia (University of Buenos Aires, Argentina), Zuhair AlSader (An Najah National University, Palestine), Hananah Ghibeh (University of Sharjah, UAE), Nizar Hawawreh (Palestine Technical University, Palestine) and Harini Kannan (MIT, USA) won 2nd place in the 2016 Annual NYUAD International Hackathon for Social Good in the Arab World.

The team created the Sadiki application that offers personal assistant for Syrian refugees to achieve excellence in the field of computer programming.

About Abu Dhabi Hackathon

The NYUAD Hackathon is a 3-day event which aims at bringing together computer science students, academics, and technology experts from around the Arab world, US and Europe to foster a culture of innovation, collaboration and entrepreneurship in computer science.

The event also aims at promoting collaboration and innovation in computer science, entrepreneurship, and the development of solution-based technology for social good and offering students in the Arab world an opportunity to explore and experience the full cycle of creating a tech startup (sharing knowledge, generating ideas, pitching ideas, learning new platforms and new programming languages, designing and developing mobile and web applications, collaboration and teamwork).

About Sadiki

The team’s idea addressed societies under threat in general and Syrian refugees in Turkey in specific. It is based on creating a Chabot app that starts conversations in Arabic with Facebook users (Syrian Refugees in Turkey) to offer them personal assistance such as which Turkish schools are best to send their children to or what ideas are best to start a project.

The team explained: “the app Sadiki (My Friend) works as an actual friend who offers assistance to its users.”

The app was mentored by Mike Clarke (CEO at Atlas IQ, USA), Leila Chan Currie (Software Engineer at Youtube, Canada).

On this occasion, Al-Sader thanked An-Najah’s staff for supporting him and his team to achieve this success.

A hackathon (also known as a hack day, hackfest or codefest) is an event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development and hardware development, including graphic designers, interface designers and project managers, collaborate intensively on software projects.
