This program seeks to provide training in the multi- and inter-disciplinary study of gender and women. It has a focus on gender relations in everyday life. “Gender” refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women and others.
The programme addresses fundamental questions about whether we are born, or become, women and men in a variety of social and cultural context, particularly that of the Arab world. It also explores how we think about differences between genders and the extent to which gender divisions continue to determine social processes and institutions. The course moreover provides an understanding of the ways in which gender is shaped historically through various forms of cultural representation. The scope of the course is both global and contemporary. The programme draws on material from sociology, anthropology, education, media, psychology, law, Islamic studies, literature, and health sciences.
