An-Najah National University, represented by Dr. Sanaa Alsarghali, Holder of UNESCO Chair on Human Rights, Democracy and Peace hosted by An-Najah, participated in the 67th session of the Commission on the Status of Women held at the United Nations in New York from 6 to 17 March 2023.

The session focused on the theme of "Innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls," and reviewed the agreed conclusions of the sixty-second session on "Challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls."

Participants included representatives from Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from around the world.

Dr. Alsarghali spoke at an official side event organized by the Ministry of Women in Palestine and ESCWA, titled "The Economic and Social Conditions of Palestinian Women Under Occupation," at the invitation of Her Excellency Dr. Amal Hamad, Minister of Women in Palestine. In her speech, Dr. Alsarghali discussed the economic and social rights of Palestinian women under Israeli occupation, with a particular focus on the right to education and its connection to Palestinian identity. She presented live testimonies from women and girls in the West Bank, Gaza, and Jerusalem, highlighting how their access to education is restricted due to the occupation's practices of intimidating or attacking women, demolishing houses, and forcing displacement.

Dr. Alsarghali emphasized that the new generation of Palestinians resists the occupation's efforts to obliterate their identity through various means, including social media. However, the occupation's restrictions on digital rights and Palestinian content remain a significant challenge to be addressed. She also noted that the occupation has consistently targeted education, particularly girls' education.
