An-Najah National University has announced the winners of the 2015 An-Najah Research Awards in Natural Sciences.


The award went to: Dr. Akram Kharroubi, Professor Hisham Darwish, Mr. Ahmad Abu Al-Halaweh and Dr. Umaiyeh Khammash representing Al-Quds University Abu Dis for their research entitled: Evaluation of Glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1c) for Diagnosing Type 2 Diabetes and Prediabetes among Palestinian Arab Population and Dr. Hikmat Hilal, Dr. Ahed Zyoud, Rana AlKerm, Rola Alkerm,  Doa׳ Abdelhadi,  Dr. DaeHoon Park, Mohammed Helal, Dr. Guy Campet,  Reham Muthaffar and Dr. Hansang Kwon representing An-Najah National University for their research entitled: Enhanced PEC characteristics of pre-annealed CuS film electrodes by metalloporphyrin/polymer matrices.

The first paper focused on comparing the potential of HbA1c to diagnose diabetes among Palestinian Arabs compared to fasting plasma glucose (FPG).

The second paper coated CuS film electrodes with metalloporphyrinato manganese (III)/polyethylene matrices where the modified electrodes exhibited High PEC characteristics. The study shows that modification enhanced both film electrode stability and efficiency together.

29 research works in Natural Sciences from Palestine and different Arab regions competed, all demonstrating a remarkable quality and originality.

The award is competitive and the winning researchers are valued for their efforts and contributions in providing scientific or technical expertise within the framework of a recognized publication.

A qualified committee selects the winning names on the basis of transparent scientific criteria, which looks at quality, originality, influence and modernity. The award was first started in 2006 and has continued ever since, despite the circumstances and suffering of Palestine and higher education.

Dr. Naji Qatanani, Dean of Scientific Research highlighted that the award aims at encouraging Arab academics to develop scientific research, including knowledge transfer and technological advancement. He stated that this happens through producing modern and distinguished research works that can be applied in Palestinian institutions, in particular and the Arab world more generally.

Professor Maher Natsheh, Acting President of An-Najah congratulated the winners and highlighted that An-Najah National University is keen to consolidate a culture of quality and quantity. The award has become an annual tradition to commend and praise distinctive scientific achievements.
