An-Najah National University has recently achieved first place in Palestine in the UI GreenMetrics of World University ranking 2016. This ranking measures universities commitment to an environmentally friendly campus and the standards of environmental sustainability.


In this year's ranking, the university was placed 7th in the Arab World and 117th in the world compared to 144th in 2015.

An-Najah consists of four campuses; namely, the New Campus, the Old Campus and the Hisham Hijjawi College Campus in Nablus; the Faculties of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine’s Campus in Tulkarem in addition to An-Najah National Hospital with a total area of 270000 m2 of which 90000 m2 are green areas.

The University has undertaken a number of green projects through the Energy Research Centre, such as the solar power and energy saving systems for the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy and An-Najah National Hospital buildings as well as a solar heating system for the Faculty of Physical Education building.

On the academic level, the university established the first master’s programme on clean energy and energy conservation which is the first of its kind in the Arab region.

  • The GreenMetrics criteria indicators are campus setting and infrastructure (15%), energy and climate change (21%), wastes (18%), water (10%), transportation (18%) and environmental education (18%).
  • An-Najah participates annually in the ranking since its establishment in 2011 through the Energy Research Centre.

  • The Faculty of Agriculture includes 5 acres of greenhouses and a farmland utilized to plant field crops and forage.
