An-Najah Student Hamza Al-Khayyat Represents the University at Ca’ Foscari in Italy

Hamza Omar Al-Khayyat, an Accounting student at An-Najah National University, joined a student exchange program at Ca’ Foscari University in Venice, Italy, through Erasmus+. Reflecting on his experience, he highlighted its impact on his personal growth, cultural exposure, and academic aspirations.
Personal and Cultural Growth
Coming from Palestine with limited resources, Hamza described how this exchange program broadened his outlook. Before the exchange, he focused on short-term goals without fully considering challenges. However, five months in Italy strengthened his adaptability and decision-making. Meeting over 200 people from diverse backgrounds reshaped his understanding of different cultures and helped him adopt positive habits.
Extracurricular Activities
Ca’ Foscari organized various events for exchange students, including a gathering with Italian students learning Arabic. Led by Dr. Bishara Obeid, Head of the Arabic Department and a Palestinian from Nazareth, the event fostered cultural exchange and lasting friendships.
Challenges and Adaptation
Being away from family and community for the first time was a challenge, but it allowed Hamza to build new relationships and adjust to an independent lifestyle. The similarities between Italian and Arab cultures eased the transition, and the warmth of the Italian people made integration smoother.
Future Aspirations
This opportunity refined Hamza’s academic and professional goals while significantly improving his language skills. His English proficiency advanced in five months more than in years of formal education, and he also gained exposure to Italian, French, and various Arabic dialects.
Advice for Students
Hamza encourages students to pursue exchange opportunities, emphasizing their value in cultural, academic, and personal development. He believes such experiences broaden perspectives, enhance critical thinking, and provide deeper insights into global challenges.
