Pioneering Urban Sustainability: Dr. Ali Abdelhamid Represents An-Najah University at WUF12 and Key Symposiums in Cairo
Reaffirming its leadership in advancing sustainable development goals (SDGs), Dr. Ali Abdelhamid, Coordinator of the Urban and Regional Planning Research Unit and faculty member in the Department of Planning Engineering and City Technology at An-Najah National University, participated in the 12th World Urban Forum (WUF12). The forum, hosted in Cairo from November 4–8, 2024, brought together global experts and practitioners to address pressing urban challenges.
During the forum, Dr. Abdelhamid conducted a specialized training session in collaboration with the Palestinian Ministry of Local Government and the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat). The training, titled “Participatory Public Space: Site-Specific Assessment and Design – Tools and Methodologies for Inclusive Social Cohesion,” focused on innovative strategies to foster social resilience through participatory urban planning.
As a keynote speaker, Dr. Abdelhamid presented at a special session on “Alternative Planning Toward Context-Sensitive Education for Post-Conflict Reconstruction in Palestine.” He delivered a research paper titled “An-Najah National University’s Academic and Applied Role in Alternative Planning through Its Scientific Centers and Academic Departments,” emphasizing the university's significant contributions to innovative planning methodologies. Additionally, he participated in a panel discussion on “The Role of Universities in Sustainable Urban Development – Particularly in Conflict-Affected Regions of the Global South.”
On the sidelines of the forum, Dr. Abdelhamid engaged with representatives from renowned urban planning organizations, including United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP), and the Türkiye Tasarım Vakfı (TTV). He also collaborated with experts from prominent academic institutions such as Abu Dhabi University, Ain Shams University, Cairo University, and the University of Jordan. These discussions explored future opportunities for joint initiatives, with a particular focus on forming research working groups to contribute to Gaza's reconstruction efforts.
In October 2024, Dr. Abdelhamid also delivered a keynote address at a scientific symposium titled “Sustainable Urban Expansion: Transformation and Innovation in Developing Industrial Parks for Future Cities.” The symposium, organized by Cairo University in partnership with Southeast University (SEU) in China, featured his research paper, “Urban Planning Policies and Mechanisms and Their Role in Sustainable Urban Land Management in the State of Palestine.”
The symposium included a meeting with the Chinese delegation, resulting in the renewal of the cooperation agreement between SEU and An-Najah National University for an additional three years. The agreement aims to strengthen research collaboration, facilitate academic exchange, and advance practical applications in sustainable urbanization and industrial park planning. It also seeks to reactivate the “China-Palestine and Middle East Center for Industrial Park Planning Technology,” established at An-Najah University in 2020.
Dr. Abdelhamid’s participation in these events underscores An-Najah National University’s global commitment to sustainable urban development. Through its scientific centers and academic programs, the university continues to play a pivotal role in advancing the SDGs, particularly those focused on creating resilient, inclusive, and sustainable communities.
