In line with its national and social responsibility, An-Najah National University, represented by its President, Prof. Abdel Nasser Zaid, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Sunday, May 7, 2023, with the Department of Refugee Affairs of the Palestine Liberation Organization, represented by Mr. Anwar Hamam, the Deputy Minister of the Department. The agreement aims to enhance joint cooperation in educational, social, developmental, and cultural matters related to refugees and their just cause.


The signing ceremony was attended by Ms. Nasreen Zoqan, Director of the Department of Refugee Affairs in the Northern West Bank, and Ms. Mervat Marar, Legal Advisor of the Department of Refugee Affairs. Representing the university were Dr. Abdel Salam Al-Khayyat, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Mr. Raed Debei, Assistant President for Community Affairs; Dr. Asaad Tefal, Coordinator of the Master's Program in Migration and Refugee Studies; and Dr. Kifah Barham, Head of the Humanities Department at the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

The two parties agreed to strengthen cooperation in raising national and regional awareness on the Palestinian refugee issue, promoting it through various purposeful programs and activities. They also agreed to enhance the partnership in historical and legal research on the Nakba and refugee matters and to intensify efforts to establish a resource and research center for refugee and migration issues at An-Najah National University.

Prof. Zaid welcomed the visiting delegation and highlighted the importance of this cooperation, underscoring the university’s commitment to the refugee cause, a pivotal and primary issue within Palestinian society, with significant national, political, and legal importance on both local and international levels. He discussed the scientific, academic, and cultural capabilities that An-Najah National University dedicates to supporting refugee and migration issues.

The delegation expressed their satisfaction with this partnership, emphasizing the societal role of An-Najah National University and its commitment to being a supportive platform for refugee issues and their hardships. They commended the university's continuous achievements, which contribute to raising Palestine’s profile in various international arenas.

Dr. Tefal noted that this memorandum would strengthen cooperation between the two parties, especially in the field of the "Master’s Program in Migration and Refugee Studies" offered by An-Najah University, through organizing scientific conferences on refugee and migration issues, conducting specialized workshops and seminars in this field, contributing to the creation of training programs for personnel capable of promoting refugee and migration issues, and providing facilities for staff of the Department of Refugee Affairs who wish to enroll in the Master's Program in Migration and Refugee Studies.
