Facilities

Anatomy & Histology Lab
The experimental trainings are performed in this laboratory in order to teach ‎students on the structural composition of animal  body .  (the study of the ‎structure and organization of living organisms and the structure of different ‎organs). Furthermore,  practical trainings are performed on how  to take ‎samples from the body of animals (Biopsy or Necropsy) and to teach ‎students how to prepare sliced tissue by the use of modern devices (Tissue ‎processor & Microtome) according to scientific methods, then examining ‎slides under microscopes, to see the histological structure of the different ‎body organs as well as the diagnosis of affected organs histologically. This ‎lab.  also could be used for the application of experiments and practical ‎training for other courses.‎
Among the devices, available in this laboratory are the following:

  • ‎Tissue processor
  • ‎Microtome
  • ‎Oven
  • ‎Light Microscopes
  • ‎Animals Skeletons.‎

Feed Analysis & Milk Hygiene Lab
Experiments & practical training for students are conducted in this laboratory ‎on the methods used to estimate the proportion (%) of protein, fat , fiber ‎and calories in samples of feed and food, and that is done by using devices ‎with high-tech and sophisticated , as well as performing the experiments ‎and the process that is used to estimate (test) the milk hygiene from the ‎physical , chemical and microbiological aspects. In addition, it can be used ‎for performing experiments and practical exercises concerning tests of soil ‎and irrigation, due to the readiness of the laboratory of tools, equipment ‎and materials.‎
Among the devices, available in this laboratory are the following:

  • ‎Flame Photometer 410,sherwood.‎
  • Ankom 200 fiber analyser A200.
  • ‎Ankom Extractor, XT 10 I.‎
  • ‎Kjeldahl  distillation  & Digestion system.‎
  • ‎Calorimeter C 200.‎
  • ‎Conductivity Meter.‎
  • ‎Daisy II Incubator, Ankom technology.‎
  • ‎Lactometers & Hydrometers.‎

Parasitology lab
Experimentation and practical  training areconducted in this laboratory on ‎finding out & examining  the internal parasites (which parasitize within the ‎body of the organism like worms in its different kinds.) and external ‎parasites (which parasitize on the body of the organism from the outside, ‎such as ticks, and fleas -etc.) , by optical microscopes through  samples ‎brought by students from the field for testing, then diagnosed for the ‎disease and treatment. This laboratory can be used for experiments and ‎practical training for other courses such as Animal Physiology and others.‎
Among the devices, available in this laboratory are the following:

  • ‎Light Microscopes.‎
  • ‎Sieves.‎
  • ‎Liquid Nitrogen Container.‎
  • ‎Hemocytometer.‎

Industry

The program has signed memorandum of understanding with Palestine Poultry Company one which ‎allows senior level student to have short term internship in the company’s facilities. For instance , ‎students receive intensive training practices in the feed mill , the hatchery, the slaughter house and ‎the broiler breeder farms. The program has also signed agreement with NGO’S, the Ministry of ‎Agriculture, and the Palestinian Union of the Food Industries. These agreements  allow fourth year ‎animal products students to conduct training and off- campus lab sessions  related to livestock and ‎poultry issues.

Teaching and Learning

The program has well qualified staff who graduated from some of the ‎best known universities in the Western Countries like US and Europe. ‎Staff members employ the latest technologies in teaching. Many ‎courses have practical parts in which students are exposed to practical ‎session that integrates the theoretical aspects of these courses. ‎Recently, e-learning, internet and many other software programs are ‎used in the teaching process. The animal laboratories and the animal ‎farm with its all units ( dairy farm, poultry farm, sheep and goats farm ‎and the mnini-dairy )are all available for training and research for the ‎students. In the fourth year, students are given the opportunity to ‎conduct research and analyze and write results and make ‎presentation for their research projects.

Coursework and Assessment

Students are subjected to various means of assessments. First, ‎second, and final examinations are given to students during every ‎semester. Students are also subjected to oral examination in some ‎courses. Also assignments are given to students to conduct a short ‎research projects in certain topics. Students are asked to write lab ‎reports for every practical session conducted in lab or in farm. At the ‎last semester (fourth year) students are trained in the dairy farm, dairy ‎plant, broiler farm for two months then student spend two more ‎months  outside the department. They receive short term training in ‎Palestine Poultry Company. At the end of the semester students are ‎asked to write a final report on skills gained and make presentations in ‎front of their colleagues and teachers.‎
