Program Description

This program seeks to provide training in the multi- and inter-‎disciplinary study of gender and women. It has a focus on gender ‎relations in everyday life. “Gender” refers to the socially constructed ‎roles, behaviours, activities, and attributes that a given society ‎considers appropriate for men and women and others.
The ‎programme addresses fundamental questions about whether we ‎are born, or become, women and men in a variety of social and ‎cultural context, particularly that of the Arab world. It also explores ‎how we think about differences between genders and the extent to ‎which gender divisions continue to determine social processes and ‎institutions. The course moreover provides an understanding of the ‎ways in which gender is shaped historically through various forms of ‎cultural representation. The scope of the course is both global and ‎contemporary. The programme draws on material from sociology, ‎anthropology, education, media, psychology, law, Islamic studies, ‎literature, and health sciences.
