Mission

Our mission is to educate and train students in scientific principles and technologies for the greater benefit of society.

Vision

The understanding of living things and surrounding environment is essential for developing and sustaining civilization. Therefore, enhancing of scientific knowledge and its ethical application serves the well being of this planet.  Biology spans many disciplines that must be integrated in order to truly understand any one of them. Biological concepts must be understood in a historical context even though they are constantly evolving. Laboratory training with modern technologies must complement classroom lectures as what we can learn depends on our understanding of the tools available.  Academic excellence is achieved through teaching and research.  The empirical nature of science demands critical thinking. Critical thinking combined with a strong foundation in biological principles can be applied to diverse careers and life-long learning. The increasing complexity of biological sciences must be supported by graduate work with a vertical transmission of knowledge from the doctoral to the pre-baccalaureate level.

Industry

There is cooperation between master program of Biologywith ‎other universities, ministries or research centers. In cases such as ‎joint supervision.

Many of the theses of master of biology deals with subjects ‎that are considered big challenges for the communities.

Theses ‎related to medical problems in the Palestinian community have ‎been carried out. Some of these researches were published in ‎international journals. Examples of medical researches includes ‎nosocomial infections, microbial resistance, genetic studies of ‎human, screening for viral, bacterial or/and fungal infections. A ‎clear relationship between master of Biology with community is ‎established through the investigation of problems faced in the ‎agricultural field such as detection of the etiological agents of ‎diseases of plants, phenotypic and genotypic classification of ‎Palestinian plants, and tissue culture development of plants.  ‎Another important relationship between the program and ‎community is food microbiology and evaluation of food safety ‎measures procedures.

Teaching and Learning

The following methods of teaching and learning are applied in the ‎master of biology:‎

  • Lectures: all of the lectures are presented by at least Ph.D. ‎professionals in their specialization fields. Most of the lectures are ‎presented by powerpoint software.
  • Preparing for teaching:  In order to evaluate understanding of ‎the studied subject and ability to teach the subject, each student is ‎asked to make a presentation in the field of the course before the ‎teaching doctor and his colleagues.‎
  • Moodel  software: some of the courses of the master of biology are also presented in the moodel software of the ‎university.
  • Assigning homework (e.g., low stakes responses to the readings ‎turned in on notecards or electronically).
  • Giving quizzes covering major points in the reading that could ‎be turned in before class.

Coursework and Assessment

Assessment of the students is based on the following criteria:

  • Exams: Each student must take 3 exams, namely first hour exam, ‎second hour and final exam.‎
  • Home works: such as reports, assignments, were the teaching ‎supervisor  evaluates the student ability to answer direct and ‎indirectquestions, as well as, ability to collect and reformulate ‎scientific information in different subjects.‎
  • oral presentations (e.g., debates, panels): This an important ‎criteria to evaluate ability of students to understand, present and ‎answer question in the studied subject.
  • Attendance of lectures and participation in the debates and ‎discussions.
