An-Najah National University’s Department of Optometry has officially renewed its membership in the World Council of Optometry for 2026, reaffirming the University’s commitment to international academic and professional standards and its continued active presence within the global framework advancing optometric education and practice.

This renewal marks the continuation of a long-standing relationship with the Council that began with the Department’s initial membership in 2005. The milestone is closely linked to the pioneering leadership of Dr. Kherieh Rassas, Vice President for Global Partnerships and Initiatives at An-Najah and President of the Euro-Mediterranean University Network (UNIMED). Since the establishment of the Department in 2004, Dr. Rassas has played a central role in shaping its academic and strategic direction, laying the foundations for excellence and distinction at both national and international levels.

Today, under the leadership of Dr. Ithar Beshtawi, Head of the Department, the Optometry program continues to build on this vision by strengthening academic programs, enhancing clinical training, and launching innovative educational and research initiatives that advance graduate competencies and keep pace with the latest scientific developments in optometry.

The Department of Optometry is widely recognized as one of the leading programs locally and regionally. It offers a comprehensive academic curriculum designed to prepare highly qualified optometrists equipped with strong theoretical knowledge and advanced practical skills. Graduates are well positioned to meet labor market demands and contribute effectively to improving the quality of visual health care. Membership in the World Council of Optometry further provides the Department with extensive opportunities for international collaboration, participation in specialized conferences, exchange of expertise, and continuous curriculum development aligned with global best practices.

The renewal represents international recognition of the Department’s academic standards and the quality of its educational outcomes, reinforcing An-Najah National University’s position as a leading higher education institution committed to advancing specialized health education, scientific research, and community service in support of the Palestinian health sector.
