Faculty of Science Research Team Publishes Peer-Reviewed Study in Prestigious Q1 Journal PLOS One on the Therapeutic Potential of Chiliadenus iphionoides

A research team from the Faculty of Science at An-Najah National University—Dr. Odey Bsharat, Dr. Yousef Salama, Dr. Nisreen Al-Haj, and Prof. Nawaf Al-Maharik—has published a peer-reviewed scientific article titled “Chiliadenus iphionoides: from chemical profiling to anticancer, antioxidant, α-amylase, and α-glycosidase activities” in the prestigious journal PLOS One. Published by the globally recognized Public Library of Science (PLOS), the journal boasts an impact factor of 3.2 and is ranked in the first quartile (Q1) worldwide.
The study investigates the chemical composition and biological activity of the essential oil extracted from the dried leaves of Chiliadenus iphionoides, commonly known as “katayleh.” It explores the oil’s antioxidant and anticancer properties, in addition to its inhibitory effects on key digestive enzymes—α-amylase and lipase—which are closely associated with metabolic and digestive health.
The essential oil was obtained through steam distillation, and its chemical constituents were identified using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS).
Findings from the study revealed that the essential oil contains a diverse range of biologically active compounds that may explain its notable therapeutic potential. The results suggest that this natural oil could serve as a valuable source for developing pharmaceutical agents with antioxidant and anticancer effects, as well as enzyme inhibitors for managing obesity and diabetes. These promising outcomes open new prospects for incorporating this plant in alternative and complementary medicine.
