An-Najah Holds Sixth Palestinian Geography Day, Urges Collaborative Efforts for Disaster Management

On March 16, 2023, the Department of Geography and Geomatics at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at An-Najah National University organized the Sixth Palestinian Geography Day, centered on the theme of "Risk and Disaster Management". The event brought together researchers, engineers, and academic staff to discuss the need for combined efforts in managing disasters in Palestine.
The participating researchers recommended the importance of concerted efforts by all Palestinian parties to confront disasters, with a focus on developing a comprehensive national system for volunteering that takes into account the availability of all necessary committees for emergency support during response, relief, and recovery operations.
The event was attended by Dr. Abdel-Khaleq Issa, Vice President Assistant for Academic Affairs, Prof. Abdel Nasser Nour, Representative of the Deanship of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, Dr. Safaa Hamadeh, Head of the Geography and Geomatics Department and Head of the event’s preparatory committee along with members of the University’s academic and administrative staff, interested students, and representatives from the Nablus Municipality and the Ministry of Local Government and Civil Defense.
During the event, Dr. Hamadeh talked about the significance of the event, which is held every March to coincide with Palestinian Land Day. She highlighted the importance of discussing the impact of the Turkish earthquake on Palestine and neighboring countries, as well as the opportunity provided by the event to share scientific and academic experiences in surveying modern technologies, Nablus city’s traffic planning, and soil erosion.
The event included two sessions featuring presentations on a range of scientific research topics, including disaster risk maps, the mechanism and aftermath of the Turkish earthquake on Palestine and neighboring countries, the role of structural plans in development, modern surveying techniques, and the assessment of soil erosion using remote sensing.
The researchers at the Sixth Palestinian Geography Day presented a set of recommendations, which emphasized the importance of involving academics and researchers in the development of strategic plans for disaster management, creating practical and implementable plans to alleviate traffic crises, comprehensive land use planning, implementing mechanisms to prevent dangers, accessing detailed danger maps, and preparing the necessary maps.
At the conclusion of the event, researchers and participants were recognized for their contributions, and Dr. Hamadeh expressed her gratitude to all attendees and participants for their valuable contributions to the success of the scientific day.
