On Wednesday, November 14, 2018, Professor Maher Natsheh, Acting President of An-Najah signed a Donation agreement with the European Organization for Nuclear Research, CERN represented by Mr. Patrick Fassnacht.


The agreement signing process was organized by Dr. Ahmed Bassalat, Chairman of WISHEPP where the Minister of Telecommunication, Prof. Allam Mousa, Dr. Maen Ishtaiwi, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Drs Hadil Abualrob and Muna Hajj Yahya, staff members at the Physics Department and members of WISHEPP were present.

The agreement was one of the third Winter School outcomes which was launched by the Physics Department in cooperation with the University of Paris Sud 11 and the Linear Accelerator Laboratory (LAL) on Sunday, November 11, 2018.

After signing the agreement, the Physics Department concluded the activities of WISHEPPIII which were over a week.

The conclusion ceremony was held at the Korean Palestinian IT Institute of Excellence in the New Campus and was attended by the Minister of Telecommunication, Prof. Mousa, Prof. Natsheh, An-Najah vice presidents and assistants, Mr. Fassnacht, Representative of CERN, Dr. Ishtaiwi and Dr. Bassalat as well as Prof. Achille Stocchi, Head of LAL and Co-Chair of WISHEPP and a large number of An-Najah students and staff.

The ceremony was moderated by Dr. Bassalat who said that the Physics Department is offering its BsC and MS students 50 scholarships for the coming couple years. He mentioned that by siging the agreement with CERN, It is the first step toward building  the centre of excellence in high energy physics in Palestine.

He also talked about the third Winter School activities which targeted university and school students and welcomed the international students who joined the school this year, also he pointed out that the Physics Department and CERN organized the Strategic Communications Planning Workshop.

The workshop was given by experts James Gillies, a member of CERN's Strategic Planning and Evaluation Unit and Noemi Caraban, an audiovisual producer  The workshop targeted Palestinian journalists and media graduates.

And with assistance from Dr. Sabri Saidam, the Minister of Education and Higher Education, Dr. Bassalat announced the launch of a national programme that aims to dispatch outstanding school students and teachers to CERN and LAL.

Prof. Mousa expressed his pride with An-Najah staff and the partners who made this event very successful locally and internationally.

Mr. Fassnacht talked about the agreement and mentioned that the scholarships will pave the way for further academic and research exchange.

In turn, Prof. Natsheh thanked the organizers and the partners and mentioned that the agreement will contribute to the academic and research advancement of An-Najah.

Prof. Stocchi gave a presentation on his experience during the third Winter School which introduced him to the Palestinian culture and customs.

He also paid tribute to the organizers and the participating students who were passionate about the topics discussed during the School's activities.

He finally announced the launch of the Fourth Winter School of High Energy Physics in Palestine (WISHEPP IV) which will take place on November 15, 2019. He added that the Erasmus+ programme is now partner and supporter of the Winter School.
