On Sunday, July 23rd, 2017, the American Corner Nablus in coordination with the English Department hosted Graham Liddell, a PhD student of Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan.


Mr. Liddell gave and presentation on 'Arab American Life in Dearborn, Michigan' that included a Skype discussion with Ali Harb, a Lebanese American journalist located in Michigan.

Mr. Liddell and Mr. Harb discussed the strong Muslim American community in cities such as Dearborn and Hamtramck, Michigan and examined some of the realities including social tensions with the Muslim community as well as peaceful and positive aspects of diversity in the cities.

 

Mr. Harb discussed his personal experiences in the US as an Arab-American immigrant and the difficulties that faced him while journeying to the US and afterwards. Mr. Harb aim was to deconstruct the belief that immigration to the US is an easy task and he emphasized that looking for an alternative place to live is difficult both physically and the psychologically. Furthermore, he talked about his experience as a journalist in the US; he discussed his belief that the journalist is supposed to provide an authentic portrayal of reality, therefore, he endeavors to be authentic when representing Arabs, Muslims and other ethnicities in the US.

Students in the American Studies Minor programme taking Contemporary American Literature and other English students attended the discussion and had an opportunity to ask questions about life in the U.S especially after the election of Donald Trump as well as questions about racism, multiculturalism and immigration.
