On Sunday, April 30th, 2017, Professor Jalal Dabeek, Director of the Urban Planning and Disaster Risk Reduction Centre at An-Najah and the Vice President of the National Authority for Disaster Risk Mitigation in Palestine participated in the 3rd Arab Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Qatar.


The conference was over two days from April 30th-May 1st, 2017 and was sponsored by the League of Arab States, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Ministry of Municipality and Environment in Qatar.

The conference aimed at implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Arab Region and developing a strategy to meet Sendai requirements during the period 2018-2030.

The conference shed light on disaster risk assessment, the Arab Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction 2030, monitoring the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the role of science and technology in disaster risk reduction as well as other important topics.

During the science and technology role in disaster risk reduction session, Prof. Dabeek presented a case study on An-Najah’s Urban Planning and Disaster Risk Reduction Centre’s role in disaster risk reduction. His presentation shed light on the national and international activities and achievements of the centre and offered results of implemented studies and a large group of the activities held by the centre.

At the end of the conference, the Arab Doha Declaration was adopted for the 5th International Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction which will be held on May 22nd-26th, 2017 in Mexico and following up the updated Arab strategy and the executive programme.
