On Wednesday, January 27th, 2016 Professor Jalal Dabeek, Director of the Urban Planning and Disaster Risk Reduction Center at An-Najah participated in The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.


The Conference which was held to discuss the Implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 was over three days from January 27-29, 2016.

The UNISDR conference aimed at launching the science and technology partnership for the implementation of the Sendai Framework. The conference also aimed at promoting and supporting the availability and application of science and technology to decision-making in disaster risk reduction and discussing how the science and technology community will best support the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.

The conference tackled subjects such as scientific and technical partnership to support the implementation of the Sendai Framework, understanding disaster risk, risk assessment and early warning and the use of science, technology and innovation tools, methods and standards.

Professor Dabeek made a presentation on the important role of academic institutions in disaster risk reduction.

  • The conference also included discussing a poster titled “SASPARM 2 Project’s Role in Disaster Risk Reduction in Palestine”.
  • SASPARM 2 aims at reinforcing international cooperation with neighboring countries to Europe in the fields of research and reducing the risk of earthquakes in Palestine through improving the capabilities of Palestinian institutions and engineers in the field of seismic design of buildings and raising awareness on earthquake risk reduction. The project is implemented by the Urban Planning and Disaster Risk Reduction Center at An-Najah, EUCENTRE and IUSS.
  • Prof. Jalal Dabeek is also the Vice President of the National Committee for Disaster Risk Reduction and Coordinator for the SASPARM.
