The Deanship of Student Affairs and the Community Service Center, in collaboration with the Sustainability Office at An-Najah National University, recently organized a training workshop via Zoom on environmental sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The workshop was attended by over 100 students enrolled in the Community Service and Sustainable Development course.

The workshop, titled "Environmental Sustainability and Its Relation to the Sustainable Development Goals," was presented by Dr. Abdul Halim Khder, Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and an expert in the field, in collaboration with Mr. Mohammad Al-Daqqa, Dean of Student Affairs at the university. The workshop focused on several key environmental topics, including water and electricity consumption reduction at the university, the importance of recycling, the causes and impacts of climate change on human life, clean energy sources, and the importance of afforestation. It also covered definitions and concepts of environmental sustainability and the importance of applying them in the current era, highlighting the close relationship between environmental sustainability and the SDGs.

Mr. Al-Daqqa welcomed the participants and emphasized the university’s commitment to achieving the SDGs, praising the collaboration among the university’s departments, centers, and colleges in organizing meaningful workshops that reflect the university’s mission and vision to achieve development goals.

He also noted that the Deanship of Student Affairs, the Community Service Center, the College of Engineering, and the Sustainability Office organized this training workshop to raise awareness and build the students' capacities in these fields, especially as they have become essential requirements for university rankings due to their developmental and societal impact on individuals and communities.

Mr. Al-Daqqa explained that community development relies on focusing on achieving sustainable development in economic, environmental, and social fields, with community service as a central component. This, he noted, emphasizes the need for an active individual in society. Hence, the course name and structure have recently been updated and developed.

Dr. Abdul Halim Khder pointed out that environmental sustainability intersects with several SDGs, including goals 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15. He also provided practical examples of how environmental sustainability is applied in general, showcasing the sustainable practices implemented by An-Najah National University.

At the end of the workshop, a set of recommendations was adopted to enhance environmental sustainability at the university. These included encouraging students to actively participate in environmental initiatives, integrating sustainability into academic curricula, and strengthening environmental policies within the university through collaborative efforts to achieve the SDGs.

It is worth noting that this workshop is part of a series of mandatory training programs for students enrolled in the Community Service and Sustainable Development course. Around 5,000 students benefit from these programs annually, aiming to raise students' awareness of the SDGs and the best practices for applying them in environmental, social, and economic aspects.
