An-Najah National University Concludes the 6th National Wooden Bridge Competition
The Deanship of Student Affairs and the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at An-Najah National University successfully concluded the 6th National Wooden Bridge Competition on October 19, 2024. Organized by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the event, held over two days at the university’s New Campus, featured 24 teams from An-Najah National University, Birzeit University, and Palestine Technical University - Kadoorie.
The Legends To Be team from Birzeit University claimed the championship title, with Tufan from An-Najah National University securing second place, and The Falcons(Alsokour) team, also from An-Najah, finishing in third. The competition, spanning nearly 36 hours, brought together students and faculty from various universities to showcase their engineering skills. Teams competed to design and construct wooden bridges capable of withstanding maximum tensile strength, with evaluations based on specific engineering criteria.
The closing ceremony was attended by several distinguished guests, including Dr. Muhannad Haj Hussein, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, Dr. Mohammad Samaaneh, Supervisor of Student Societies at the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Samir Abu Eisha, ASCE Supervisor, Mr. Eyad Al-Aqra, Director of Student Affairs, and student Heba Al-Masri, President of ASCE. Faculty members, university administrators, and participating teams also attended the event.
In his remarks, Dr. Haj Hussein emphasized the importance of such competitions in enhancing students' practical skills and preparing them for the workforce, noting that this marks the sixth time An-Najah National University has hosted the event, despite the ongoing challenges facing Palestine. He praised the efforts of the Faculty of Engineering, the Deanship of Student Affairs, and ASCE in organizing the competition, commending the discipline and dedication of the participating teams. Prof. Abu Eisha reflected on the achievements of ASCE in organizing the competition, thanking the supervisors, organizers, and committees for their efforts. He congratulated all participants for their contributions and for fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange between universities.
Student Heba Al-Masri highlighted the key role ASCE plays in providing both academic and extracurricular opportunities for students, expressing gratitude to the Deanship of Student Affairs for its support and acknowledging the contributions of sponsors and partners who helped make the event a success. The ceremony concluded with the announcement of the winners and the distribution of awards to the top teams, sponsors, and organizers.
Mr. Eyad Al-Aqra, Director of Student Affairs, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to supporting student initiatives, particularly those led by scientific societies such as ASCE. He commended the efforts of all involved in organizing the competition, which fosters academic collaboration and enhances students’ technical and leadership skills. The 6th National Wooden Bridge Competition began on October 17, 2024, with a welcoming ceremony at the Engineering Auditorium. The event aimed to strengthen ties between university students across Palestine and provide a platform for practical learning and innovation in the field of civil engineering.
