Optometry Program at An-Najah Receives Membership in VOSH International for Global Vision Care Services
The Optometry Program at the Faculty of Medicine and Allied Medical Sciences at An-Najah National University has obtained membership in VOSH International (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity), a non-profit international organization dedicated to providing vision care services to communities worldwide, with a particular focus on reaching underserved and marginalized populations lacking access to eye care.
This achievement marks a significant addition to the program’s development, reflecting the University’s commitment to community engagement and its dedication to participating in international initiatives that enhance the quality of education and clinical training for optometry students. Through this membership, students will have opportunities to take part in field vision-screening campaigns, collaborate with medical teams in delivering free eye-care services to those in need, particularly in rural areas and Palestinian refugee camps.
Dr. Kherieh Rassas, Vice President for Partnerships and Global Initiatives, praised this accomplishment, emphasizing its importance in strengthening the University’s standing among international academic institutions in applied medical sciences. She noted that this step also serves as a driving force for expanding service to local and regional communities.
Dr. Eethar Bishtawi, Head of the Optometry Program, stated that joining VOSH International opens new horizons for students and academic staff to participate in global volunteer programs and exchange expertise in vision diagnosis and blindness prevention. She expressed pride in representing Palestine within this international framework.
Student Roaa Sannoubar, President of the Optometry Student Association at the University, highlighted that this milestone represents a transformative opportunity for students, offering broad prospects for volunteering and gaining hands-on experience through participation in global humanitarian field programs. She affirmed that joining VOSH International provides the Association with a genuine opportunity to connect theoretical knowledge with practical application and to strengthen students’ sense of social responsibility.
In this context, the first official meeting was held between the Optometry Program administration and the Optometry Student Association at An-Najah National University with representatives of VOSH International on Monday, August 18, 2025, via Zoom. The meeting discussed future partnership pathways, mechanisms for enhancing cooperation in volunteer programs, and opportunities for students to participate in the organization’s global field projects.
