An-Najah National University continued to achieve outstanding success as it has been ranked 1st in Palestine, 4th ‎in the Arab World and 106th in the world in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking 2021, which measures universities commitment to an environmentally friendly campus and addressing the problems of sustainability and environmental impact.


The aim of this ranking is to provide the result of online survey regarding the current condition and policies related to Green Campus and Sustainability in the Universities all over the world. Furthermore, through this ranking more attention will be given to combating global climate change, energy and water conservation, waste recycling, and green transportation.

The Vice President for Planning, Development and Quality Assurance, Dr. Nidal Dwaikat stated that this successful outcome was as a result of the University's commitment towards environmental conservation and preservation through various teaching, research and co-curricular activities as well as quality management system based on effective environmental management.

The University ensures progress towards an environmentally friendly campus through implementing and adopting environmentally friendly and sustainable policies, programs and activities, including improving the University's facilities and infrastructures, offering support for students and employees with special needs such as accommodation adapted for the needs of people with disabilities, creating a safe environment to keep students, faculty and visitors safe while on campus through ensuring quality university facilities and security technologies, and aligning the University budgets with the SDGs.

The University has also undertaken a number of green projects through the Energy Research Centre, such as the solar power and energy saving systems for several faculties at the University. Furthermore, the University is also dedicated to advancing scientific research on a global level and to meeting the community’s needs by participating in sustainable economic, technical and human development.

The ranking's criteria indicators include 39 ones and 6 criteria i.e. Setting and Infrastructure (SI), Energy and Climate Change (EC), Waste (WS), Water (WR), Transportation (TR), and Education (ED).
