An-Najah Research Team Publishes Palestine’s First AI-Based Study on University Students’ Bicycle Preferences

A research team from An-Najah National University, in collaboration with the Palestinian Union of Local Authorities, published the first study of its kind in Palestine titled:
“Bicycle Choice: Machine Learning Approach to Understanding University Students’ Attitudes Toward Cycling.”
The team included Prof. Khaled Al-Sahili and Dr. Fadi Hassouna (Faculty of Engineering), researchers Batoul Al-Tanboor and Diala Jomaa, and Dr. Ahmad Jaber (representing the Palestinian Union of Local Authorities and Budapest University of Technology and Economics).
Published in the Ain Shams Engineering Journal (Impact Factor: 6.0, Elsevier, Q1 ranking), the study used Random Forest and k-means clustering to analyze survey data from over 1,000 An-Najah students.
It found that daily transport mode, gender, and car ownership strongly influence students’ cycling preferences and safety perceptions.
This achievement supports applied research in sustainable transport and aligns with An-Najah’s vision for impactful, collaborative research.
