Pioneering Research on Gender Equality: An-Najah University Highlights SDG 5 in the Arab World

Professor Waleed Sweileh, Director of the Department of Academic Rankings and Dean of Scientific Research at An-Najah National University, has published a research paper titled "Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Arab Countries: A Bibliometric Review of the Literature on SDG 5" in the renowned international journal Global Knowledge, Memory and Communication, published by Emerald Publishing Limited.
The paper provides a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of scholarly literature focusing on Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5), which aims to achieve gender equality in the Arab world. It evaluates the research landscape, identifies trends, highlights key contributors, and uncovers critical research areas, offering evidence-based insights to inform policies designed to advance gender equality and empower women.
The study examined 634 English-language research articles published in peer-reviewed journals between 1993 and 2022. These works address topics such as domestic violence, female genital mutilation, women’s empowerment, microfinance, and gender-based violence. Findings revealed a significant increase in publications following the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015.
Professor Sweileh emphasized the pressing need for more research on gender equality and women’s empowerment in the Arab world. He urged regional researchers to prioritize these critical issues, producing comprehensive studies to inform evidence-based policymaking and tackle the underlying social and cultural challenges.
This research underscores An-Najah National University's dedication to advancing scientific inquiry that addresses global and regional priorities. It further highlights the university’s leadership in supporting Sustainable Development Goals and fostering innovation and academic excellence.
