An-Najah National University participated in the 1st EMPAC — Eastern Mediterranean Poison Center Association Congress, held in Kuwait from 22–24 January 2026 under the patronage of Kuwait’s Minister of Health and with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO). The congress brought together leading experts in toxicology, emergency medicine, and public health from 14 countries to enhance patient safety, improve clinical responses to poisoning cases, and strengthen regional cooperation in poison management.

The University was represented by Prof. Sa’ed Zyoud, Director of the Poison Control and Drug Information Unit, who delivered a scientific lecture examining research trends, collaboration networks, and Arab contributions to clinical and nano-toxicology. He emphasized the importance of integrating scientific research with clinical practice to inform health policy and decision-making, particularly in resource-limited settings.

On the sidelines of the congress, An-Najah also participated in a WHO expert workshop dedicated to establishing a regional poison centers network in the Eastern Mediterranean. The workshop focused on capacity building, data sharing, operational standardization, and strengthening emergency preparedness. Discussions further addressed the development of sustainable regional services, improvement of public health systems, and expansion of professional collaboration across countries.

Established in 2006, the Poison Control and Drug Information Center at An-Najah was created to promote safe medication use, enhance the clinical management of poisoning cases, and reduce related public health risks. The center operates a 24/7 hotline, provides guidance to the public and healthcare professionals, supports preventive and educational initiatives, and contributes to policy development in health and safety. Its accreditation by the World Health Organization recognizes it as one of the first centers in the region to provide continuous services and underscores An-Najah’s leadership in toxicology and public health.

This participation reflects An-Najah National University’s ongoing commitment to advancing toxicology research, strengthening public health systems, and fostering regional and international partnerships across the Eastern Mediterranean.
