Dr. Maryam Hmoudah Completes Dual PhD and Secures Schlumberger Grant for Pioneering Research in Water Treatment

The Academic and Professional Development Center at An-Najah National University proudly celebrates the remarkable academic and professional achievements of Dr. Maryam Hmoudah, Assistant Professor in the Chemical Engineering Program.
Dr. Hmoudah recently completed a prestigious dual PhD program between the University of Naples Federico II in Italy and Åbo Akademi University in Finland, specializing in the development of advanced materials for environmental remediation. This achievement reflects the university’s commitment to supporting cutting-edge research in fields of critical local and global relevance.
In further recognition of her excellence, Dr. Hmoudah has been awarded the Schlumberger Faculty for the Future Home Return Grant—an internationally competitive award that supports outstanding women researchers from developing countries in continuing their research at their home institutions. This grant will empower Dr. Hmoudah to pursue pioneering research in green chemistry and nanotechnology, with a particular focus on developing cost-effective and scalable solutions for industrial wastewater treatment—an urgent priority given the escalating water challenges facing Palestine and the region.
Dr. Hmoudah’s research focuses on the design and evaluation of advanced adsorbents and photocatalysts for removing pharmaceutical residues and dye pollutants from water, offering sustainable and practical solutions to pressing environmental and water-related challenges.
She holds a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering and Petroleum Refining from the University of Calgary in Canada and has contributed to the field through more than six peer-reviewed scientific publications.
Beyond her research contributions, Dr. Hmoudah serves as the faculty advisor for the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Student Chapter at An-Najah National University. Through this role, she actively mentors and supports students, fostering their engagement in impactful academic and professional activities.
Dr. Hmoudah is also widely recognized for her passion for education and her strong advocacy for women’s empowerment in science and engineering. Through her teaching and supervision, she continues to inspire a new generation of scientists and engineers, particularly young women navigating complex social and political contexts.
