An-Najah University and Al-Safa Academy Host Second International Quranic Studies Conference on Moderation and Contemporary Issues




An-Najah National University, in collaboration with Al-Safa Academy for Quranic Services, Malaysia, successfully held the Second International Quranic Studies Conference on July 10, 2023, at the Martyr Zafer Al-Masri Auditorium on the university’s Old Campus. Themed “Contemporary Issues in Light of the Approach of Moderation in the Holy Quran,” the conference gathered scholars, researchers, and specialists from both the region and abroad, fostering meaningful discussions and insights on key contemporary issues.
The opening session, chaired by Dr. Alaa Maqbool, featured remarks from several prominent figures, including Prof. Abdel Nasser Zaid, President of An-Najah University; Prof. Jamal Al-Kilani, Dean of the Faculty of Shari'ah and Chair of the Conference Organizing Committee; Dr. Zulkifli Mohamad al-Bakri, President of the Islamic Science University of Malaysia (via Zoom); and Dr. Samer Samara, Director of Al-Safa Academy. The event also saw participation from university faculty, students, and representatives of community organizations, adding diverse perspectives to the discussions.
In his opening remarks, Prof. Zaid highlighted An-Najah’s recent achievements, including its ranking among the top 150 young universities globally by the Times Higher Education and its five-star QS rating, reaffirming the university’s leadership in Palestine. He stressed the importance of Quranic principles of moderation and the rejection of extremism in fostering peace, harmony, and social cohesion.
Prof. Al-Kilani emphasized the significance of promoting Quranic moderation to address individual, familial, and societal challenges. He noted that the conference aimed to provide practical solutions to modern issues based on Quranic insights, expressing gratitude to both An-Najah University and Al-Safa Academy for supporting the event.
Dr. Zulkifli Mohamad al-Bakri praised An-Najah’s academic standing and highlighted the relevance of Quranic principles in addressing contemporary challenges. He underscored the importance of fostering positive societal change by applying the Quranic approach of moderation.
Dr. Samer Samara commended the partnership between An-Najah University and Al-Safa Academy, emphasizing the role of the Quran’s message of moderation in shaping balanced Muslim identities and building harmonious societies.
The conference comprised three thematic sessions:

“The Approach of Moderation in the Quran and the Role of Religious Institutions” chaired by Prof. Maher Khudair, Chief Justice of the Supreme Sharia Court of Palestine.

“Building Muslim Character and Family Issues in the Approach of Moderation” chaired by Dr. Ahmad Shubash.

“Society and Civil Peace in Light of the Approach of Moderation in the Holy Quran” chaired by Dr. Raed Assi, Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Sciences – Kafr Bara.
In the closing session, Prof. Al-Kilani expressed his gratitude to participants, researchers, and sponsors. He presented the conference’s key findings and recommendations, emphasizing their importance in promoting moderation and peace within society through practical, Quranic-based solutions.
