On Wednesday, December7, 2022, An-Najah National University and College of Applied Sciences in Gaza Strip, kicked off the activities of the “Innovations in Geographic Information Systems” Conference at Zafer Al-Masri Auditorium, Old Campus.


A group of specialists, researchers, and interested students attended the conference, which was organized by the University's Public Relations Department. Other participants included several Palestinian universities, directorates of education in all governorates in Palestine, and relevant institutions.

Dr. Abdel-Khaleq Issa, Vice President Assistant for Academic Affairs, Humanities, Dr. Rafat Al-Jallad, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, and Dr. Safaa Hamadah, Chair of the Conference’s Preparatory Committee attented the conference’s opening ceremony while Dr. Tamer Ishteiwi, Vice President of the College of Applied Sciences for Academic Affairs joined the conference opening via Zoom.

The conference was held to celebrate the GIS day which is a worldwide event that celebrates the technology of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Two sessions were held during the conference. The first session, which was chaired by Dr. Ahmed Raafat Ghadiya, Lecturer in the Geography and Geomatics Department at the University, focused on scientific research on geographic information systems in the fields of climate, environment, water, population, urbanization, transportation, security, planning and economics.

The second session, which was chaired by Dr. Shtewi, dealt with technical research on mobile applications, artificial intelligence, Internet, big data, drone photos, smart cities, and establishment of information models for geographic information systems.

The conference included an exhibition on geography and geomatics, and resulted in several recommendations including strengthening cooperation between Palestinian universities, ministries, and governmental and private institutions in the areas of scientific research and applications of geographic information systems in solving various problems, standardizing databases in institutions at the national level, and facilitating data and information exchange between researchers and institutions.
