About Project

The project aims to integrate risk reduction and climate adaptation into efforts to accelerate the reconstruction of Gaza and the rebuilding of livelihoods once the current war subsides. Funded by University College London (UCL) Innovation and Enterprise.

Objectives

1. Establish a global network of researchers, NGOs, and government authorities dedicated to post-conflict reconstruction in Gaza, using the shared language of design and risk reduction to foster collaboration and envision a resilient future.

2. Analyse how existing urban development projects and knowledge on multihazard risk in conflict-prone and post-disaster zones can inform and accelerate effective rebuilding efforts in Gaza.

3. Develop a strategic review of ongoing and proposed reconstruction initiatives and documents, highlighting gaps, vulnerabilities, and opportunities for risk reduction and climate adaptation, and recommending actionable steps forward.

International partners:

  • University College London – Department of Risk and Disaster Reduction (UCL RDR).
  • Turkiye Design Council (TDC) – NGO
  • ANOFA Engineering (AE) – Private Consultancy Firm

Local key stakeholder:

Palestinian Ministry of Public Works and Housing

Expected outcomes:

  •  Defined Goals for Reconstruction: Clear articulation of short- and long-term objectives for Gaza's reconstruction with a focus on natural hazards & climate change
  •  Shared Principles for Engagement: Establishment of agreed-upon principles - such as inclusion, equity, and sustainable urban growth - that will guide new projects and hold stakeholders accountable.
  •  Strategic Prioritisation: Identification of key priorities from existing plans, along with areas requiring reassessment or evaluation in light of the damage caused by the ongoing conflict.
  •  Risk Spot Analysis: Recognition of high-risk areas/zones that will necessitate revising existing plans or receiving focused attention when formulating new strategies (data?)
  •  Best Practices Compilation: Collection of successful practices from other post-disaster and post-conflict reconstruction contexts, providing valuable insights for Gaza’s future planning.
