The overall goal of this course is to provide a broad-based foundation in neuroscience including both the theoretical background and research experience at the interface between neuroscience and psychology. Students will develop an understanding of the cross-disciplinary field of neuroscience by study of major neuroscience topics at a scale ranging from molecular through synaptic and cellular processes up to the level of whole animal including human behaviour. To achieve this, the course is divided into three main modules. Collectively, these modules described shortly, will enable the student to explore the structure and function of the nervous system - from the microscopic inner workings of a single nerve cell, to the staggering complexity of the brain, and beyond to the social interactions and societal dynamics that our brains make possible.

Each individual is a unique creature influenced by their own biology, experiences, family of origin, social/ economic/educational status, culture, religion, language, and cohort exposure. The field of psychology recognizes and explores the deep structure of understanding that is determined by culture, religion, and other variations in the human condition. There are theories, ethics, methods of assessment, and methods of treatment that take into account the issue of diversity in psychology that will be introduced and presented in this class.

Knowing how to form investigational hypotheses, being familiar with methods of investigation, a working knowledge of statistical analysis, and the ability to interpret research findings are critical skills for all clinical psychologists to possess. The course will review the basic theory of research methodology, statistical practices in qualitative and quantitative research, data interpretation and ethical considerations of using human subjects, as well information about the process of distributing research findings.

This course is designed to introduce the framework and theory of the branch of psychology based on the initial work of J.B. Watson, B.F. Skinner and Ivan Pavlov, which emerged as a reaction to the purely “mentalistic” theories of psychology and focused on observable behaviors and scientifically validated reactions. Later outgrowths included biological phenomenon and thoughts (cognitions) to complete the Cognitive Tradition in Psychology. Cognitive Behavioral Theories emphasize behavioral/ cognitive units and the environmental structures that maintain them including reinforcement patterns, and social learning. Behavioral Analysis is an individualistic assessment system utilized in Cognitive Behavioral theories to understand the environmental patterns that are sustaining problematic behaviors. The course will cover the therapies and modes of treatment that coordinate with Cognitive Behavioral theory as well as to compare and contract treatment results with those of other relevant theories of psychology.
