On Tuesday 30 September, in partnership with the French Consulate General in Jerusalem, An-Najah National University and the French Institute for the Near East hosted a Conference entitled “Living, Consuming and Action in Glocal Palestine".

In his opening speech, Mr. Herve Magro, the Consul General of France, commended the relations between An-Najah and the French Government in the fields of science and research. He also said he was proud of having a specialized French Department at An-Najah. He added that:

it is very important to hold conferences such as this and implement their outcomes, especially the international ones, for the sake of promoting expertise and research exchange and ultimately for the development of the people of Palestine.”

Mr. Magro added:

“Nablus is a significant city in Palestine, being the economic capital and having witnessed trade movement throughout history. That has placed Nablus at the heart of advanced cities of its time. Today’s trade movement brings back some of its former glory and Nablus is once more home to one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the region. This is taking Palestine into a new advanced level. Today, our French archaeological expedition is working hard in Sabestia, and the findings confirm the strength of the region’s history and civilization since ancient times”.

In turn, Dr. Mohammad Amleh, Vice President for Academic Affairs welcomed the French Consul and the international researchers to An-Najah and thanked the French Consulate for his efforts in supporting education, particularly scientific research. He also said An-Najah is proud of the cooperation with France in the academic field adding:

"This conference is to explore the issues between the local and the global which effects social and political life and proposes solutions to this new situation. Not just because of the political, cultural and social peculiarity of the situation in Palestine, but beyond that to new patterns lifestyles within an imposed glocal reality. These solutions will help us understand, adapt to this reality”.

In his speech, Dr. Joni Assi, Head of the UNESCO Chair for Democracy and Human Rights at An-Najah, said:

The efforts that are being put into this conference aim at  establishing the concept of globalization as thought and a practice in our present time, despite the hardships that are being faced to reach a mature concept of globalization in Palestine, especially it being a country under occupation

Dr. Stephani Abdallah, from the French Institute for the Near East and the National Center for Scientific Research, thanked An-Najah for hosting the conference saying that there are serious problems dealing with the world’s new order, especially new lifestyles.

She added that discussions such as these are meant to come up with a philosophy to face these challenges and constraints, which will be discussed over the course of the conference.

In the opening session, the main speaker Professor John Collins, from Saint Lawrence University in New York, gave a lecture entitled”Defending the environment in global Palestine”. The lecture included the main ideas from his book “The impact on globalization on Palestine”, a main topic of the conference.

The first day of the conference consisted of two sessions where researchers from An-Najah and Birzeit University, Gaza, the French Institute for the Near East in Lebanon, Italy, France, and the UK took part.

The first session revolved around “Reconsidering the concept of life under occupation: the cities and the citizens between the emerging globalization and the shut off”, while the second revolved around the big title “Visual scenes and artistic spaces between the local and the globalised”.

Notes:

-     On the margin of the conference held an open-air screening of in 4 films in the historic town of Sabestia. The films were (5 minutes at home), (A nation for rent), (the last supper), and (recipes for resistance).
