On Saturday 12 April, An-Najah National University held a workshop entitled “Particle Physics”, in the framework of Physicists without Borders. The Department of Physics hosted four researchers from the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and the European Organisation for Nuclear Research CERN.

The workshop was carried out in two sessions; the first covered three presentations and included discussions and illustrations of the principles of Elementary Particle Physics, the method of detecting these particles, and explanations of the operation of nuclear accelerators used to run collisions between particles to produce elementary particles. Furthermore, the session discussed the Higgs Boson theory and how to scientifically detect and interpret the mass presence of various particles. The second session included training on how to find out the particles and identify them through reviewing former experiences conducted in the CERN accelerator.

Notes:

-          The workshop was attended by Prof. Sami Jaber, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr Iyad Sa’ed Al-Deen, Head of physics Department; Prof. Isam Al-Ashqar, Coordinator of the Masters’ Programmes at the Department of Physics; Prof. Mohammad Al-Sa’eed, Member of the Department Teaching Staff; and a number of graduates and undergraduates.

-          The participants were given a lecture addressing the available various academic graduate and post graduate programmes in the field of physics, and the application and registration process.
