In a significant initiative led by the UNESCO Chairs at An-Najah National University and in collaboration with the Arab Water Experts Network (AWEN) and the Palestinian National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, the Water Diplomacy in the Arab Region Conference convened successfully in Amman.

This transformative conference, supported by UNESCO, brought together distinguished experts and officials from across the Arab world, marking a pivotal step toward addressing complex water-related challenges in the region.

His Excellency Prof. Ali Zidan, Chairman of the Palestinian National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, and Engineer Mazen Ghoneim, Head of the Palestinian Water Authority, joined the event, highlighting the critical importance of water diplomacy in the context of regional dynamics. The participation of such figures underscored the urgency of addressing water rights, especially in light of the challenges posed by the Israeli occupation and the deprivation of Palestinian people of their water resources.

An-Najah University was well-represented at the conference by a distinguished delegation including Prof. Saed Al-Khayyat, Director of Scientific Centers, Dr. Anan Jayousi, UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Water Resources Management, Dr. Sanaa Al Sarghali, UNESCO Chair for Democracy and Human Rights, and Dr. John Assi, Water Law Expert.

The conference commenced with a compelling presentation by Dr. Al Sarghali, who skillfully moderated the dialogue during the initial session. Subsequent sessions delved into introductory discussions, underscoring the critical role of water diplomacy in conflict resolution and safeguarding water rights, particularly within the context of ongoing challenges in the region.

The UNESCO representative in attendance commended the UNESCO Chairs at An-Najah University for their leadership in driving such essential scientific initiatives. These efforts are integral in advancing sustainable development and contributing to the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Al-Jayousi presented a comprehensive set of recommendations, emphasizing the imperative of consolidating and unifying the Arab stance in negotiations surrounding water rights.
