In co-operation with McGill University, Canada, the Community Service Centre (CSC) was founded in 1999 in the city of Nablus. CSC was initiated as one of the Centres of the An-Najah National University which would serve the Local Community in the spheres of social and housing for citizens of limited income. The idea behind the foundation of the CSC is to help the Community in solving its problems and meeting its needs by itself. With this idea in mind, the Centre works on helping those who are in need of special treatment by providing them with their essential needs and helping them to rely on themselves as well as their supporting Community.
In order to approach this, the CSC relies on the employee’s efforts, experts, academics and local volunteers, as well as the Community. The CSC aims to adopt and follow up the public demands and meet them. This will present a new model in the relationship between the University and the Local Community.
Since its establishment, the CSC achieved a high level of respect and credit from its Community. This is one of the fruits of the co-operation with other associations, of the services offered to the Community and of the role played by the University in this network.
When CSC was launched, the basic idea was to encourage in the implementation of the social development theories. Over years, social needs have increased and have affected the strategy which has allowed the CSC to expand and meet the increasing demands- especially after the deterioration of the economic situation in Palestine. The experiment has been upgraded to enrich the services offered to the Community in co-operation with the other associations.
The CSC believes that sustainable development should be from within the Local Community because the external support is not sustainable. This leads to the activation of human resources and expands the cycle of participation in the Community.
