The Energy Research Centre (ERC) was established in 1996 by a decision of the Board of Trustees of An-Najah National University (ANU). The research centre is concerned with research, development, system design, feasibility studies, training in all conventional and renewable energy fields, energy management and energy conservation. In early 2000, the scope of the centre was expanded to encompass the impact of energy on global environment, health and social development.
Since its establishment, the centre has been working closely with many authorities and NGO's working in the energy and environmental sector. These include the Palestinian Energy Authority(PEA), Ministry of Industry, Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, Palestine Standard Institute, Palestinian Meteorological Office, municipalities, and Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committees(P.A.R.C). Additionally, the Centre has established strong relationships and links in neighbouring countries, and overseas.
